Her Care Clinic – Your Baby during First Trimester

First Trimester: It is a span of 12 weeks. In this trimester the fertilized egg change from small grouping cells to a fetus that starts to have baby features.

At the end of the first month

  • Amniotic Sac forms around the fertilized egg.
  • A round, flat organ called the placenta, which transfers nutrients from the mother to baby and transfers waste from the baby, develops by the end of the first month
  • Primitive face takes form with large dark circles for eyes.
  • Mouth, lower jaw, and throat start developing
  • Blood cells start taking shape and circulation begins
  • By the end of the first month, your baby is around 6-7 mm (¼ inch) long – about the size of a grain of rice.

Week 8 (2nd Month)

  • Facial features continue to developing
  • Each ear starts developing like a little fold of skin at the side of the head
  • Tiny buds start forming which eventually grows into arms and legs
  • Fingers, toes, and eyes also start forming
  • The neural tube (brain, spinal cord, and other neural tissue of the central nervous system) is well-formed.
  • The digestive tract and sensory organs start developing
  • Bone starts to replace cartilage
  • The embryo starts moving although you may not feel it.
  • By the end of this month, your baby is a fetus about 2.54 cm (1 inch) long and weighs about 9.45g

Week 12 (3rd Month)

  • Your baby is fully formed by the end of the third month
  • Your baby has arms, hands, fingers, feet, and toes and can open and close its fists and mouth
  • Fingernails and toenails start developing, and the external ears are formed
  • Although the reproductive organs develop, the baby‘s gender is difficult to distinguish on ultrasound
  • Circulatory and urinary systems start working and the liver produces bile
  • At the end of the third month, your baby is about 7.6-10 cm (3-4 inches) long weighs about 28g

Since the most critical development has taken place, your chance of miscarriage drops considerably after three months.
